Setlist – 05/15/2012
When I started this show six years ago, I always intended to occasionally throw some world music in, even though it's not really my thing a lot of the time, because one of the things that really attracts me to drinking music is that it's universal. Every culture interacts with alcohol, has music, and makes music about their interactions with alcohol. There are probably a few exceptions, but even the cultures that currently disallow boozing still have a historical relationship with the stuff.
I didn't follow up on that intention much, because I don't really speak any other languages and I don't really know what to look for. When I've encountered stuff, I've thrown it up, and that's been cool, but ethnic/world/folk (in the true sense) music has not really been a big part of Mother's Milk. Until tonight! We're celebrating the recent release of a mass of Alan Lomax's recordings with two hours of songs that were classified as 'Drinking Songs' by his organization, Cultural Equity. Or all of them. I'm not sure if it's going to be less than two hours worth of music, or more than two hours worth, but we're going to play as much of it as we can, anyways. From Appalachia to the Carribean to the Soviet Union, we'll be listing to folks. Who drink. Do music. For drinking.
Aww… a little over an hour in, it stopped working, so I had to do something else. Oh well! Maybe we'll revisit this font of drunken world music in later weeks… it was an interesting show. If you like world music, you'll love the first hour. If you like punk-rock, rock, metal, blues and/or jazz, you'll like the second hour. If you like all that shit, you'll like ALL the hours! If you fall into any of those categories, download the episode by clicking here. As always, feel free to check out our Facebook by clicking here.
