Great article about a musician I’ll be playing tomorrow night…

I just read this thoroughly amusing semi-bio of Hasil Adkins, and felt it needed to be shared with the world.

Billy Miller relates war stories of touring with Adkins when he was on parole for a weapons violation involving a typical backwoods shoot-out over a girl in which the offending parties were too drunk to hit each other with sawed-off shotguns. The very first piece of Norton Records stationery ever issued was a note pleading with a judge in West Virginia to allow Adkins to keep working and practicing. The judge fired back a note that read, “Oh, Hasil don’t need no practice.”

Great stories about a great dude I never heard of ’till today.

Setlist – 05/05/2008

At some point, after I get through all this stuff I pulled at random from the New Music shelves, I’ll be playing a bunch of stuff off the first four or five Mekons albums. I just discovered them, thanks to a CD by the (related project) Waco Bros. that the station tossed, and I’m a big fan. You probably will be too, after tonight. 🙂

But first, I scoured the New Rock shelves for stuff that might be about booze and I found a decent number of tracks to play. I suspect some of them will be garbage, but we’ll have a lot of fun finding out, right? Right? Glad you’re with me. Let’s go!

Setlist – 04/28/2008

99 bottles of beer on the wall… take one down, a’ight? I should look for a full-length version of that song. Someone has to have done one. It would be great for a cigarette break. Or ten. Tonight, we’re runnin’ the gamut again. I think I use that phrase too much, but I really like the word ‘gamut’ so I’m leaving it in. Punk, metal, crust, alt-country, regular country, hybrids of the above, reggae recorded in Japan… and some good ole’ home-grown RVA music of various genres.

Drink up, for tomorrow ye may die. Or tonight, even. Who knows?
